I should be sleeping, but I head out after work tomorrow for Bremen, Germany where I will meet my friend Mike and his girlfriend for the weekend. Rugby matches to see (I hope) and some fun pictures to share after the weekend (i also hope).

I am a bit nervous as I have never navigated a train system such as this and I only have my handy pocket language guide so the German I'll be able to manage will be minimal.

Wish me luck.

Prospective Travel Plans

and some set ones too

I have no pictures, i have work to do and should be working right now - but my mental break was needed and thought I should let anyone who cares what my prospective travel plans. There will be pictures from these trips, but more pictures of my office will not be fun.

May 31st - June 3rd Bremen, Germany
June 7th - 10th Zurich, Switzerland
June 15th - 17th Paris, France OR some place local as plans are not yet set
June 21st - 24th Amsterdam, Netherlands or a music festival in Biddinghuizen, Netherlands
June 28th - July 1st San Sebastian, Spain
July 5th - 8th No plans set, but thinking Rome or Paris
July 12th -15th No plans set, but really want to go to Paris this weekend for Bastille Day
July 20th -22nd Oslo, Norway
July 27th - 29th Town in the Netherlands where Lieke is from
August 3rd-5th Amsterdam to meet my mom
August 5th - 15th Travelling with mom - plans still unknown

I have met my office mates - One is from Colombia and we have been speaking in some Spanish together and the other is Iranian and is very nice. We have all had some stimulating political discussions and I think that we will all get along.

Back to work. Missing all my friends and family.

Same day, different afternoon

To the beach!

sunny 75 °F

My hassles with the washing machine are over for now. I have successfully gotten my clothes spun and hopefully washed well enough to be drying in the open air.

2012-05-28 Airing my dirty laundry

I had this amazing feeling while hanging my clothes (though i still miss my washer and DRYER) where I recalled one of the last times I hung my clothes on a line to dry that is coincidentally one of my first memories. I was staying or visiting with my grandma in Florida and I was very small, maybe around 3 or 4, and I went with her to do laundry in the sunshine - hanging the clothes to dry. Then i thought of my mom folding laundry with me when I was small and I looked upon these memories fondly. They of course were probably not so happy to be doing laundry and having to watch a smile child at the same time, but I remember some strange connection, something that I needed to learn. Each of those memories triggers many more. Hanging clothes is not how I commonly dry my clothes, but it might be if I lived in a more rural setting.

Before I had these amazing nostalgia bubbles burst in my mind I made my way to the beach. The frustration of doing laundry here needed to be released through my fingers in the sand. I rode my bike into town, over the bridge and down to the little bitty beach that looks towards Nijmegen. I didn't make it out there until 4ish in the afternoon and stayed until around 7pm. It doesn't get dark here until around 10pm so plenty of time for the perfect beach weather. I sat on this holiday on the beach and thought, stared, absorbed the sun, read some in my guidebooks, tried practicing some Dutch to myself and even did a little writing.
The moments afforded to me today would not be possible without the support of my love and my family - the very best things in my life. The only thing that could have made today at the beach better was if I could have all my family and friends there with me to absorb the moment.

After I got home and hung my clothes on the line I asked my German flatmate if she had eaten and wanted to join me at getting some pizza at one of the places below where we stay. I practiced my Dutch by ordering in the local language and ate some delicious softijs - soft serve ice cream - and some greasy pizza. Hard to beat Spanky's, Star Pizza, & Pink's Pizza back home.

Today's a Holiday

and I'm doing laundry

Today's a holiday and I'm doing laundry - I didn't intend to be doing laundry, but as the machine won't let me open the door from yesterday and I can't get the water to drain although I have figured out how to get it to spin, I am here now doing laundry.

I have enlisted the assistance of one of my flatmates who has been kind enough to walk with me to the basement, although she told me honestly she never uses it and has only used the washer once, because she goes home and has her mother do her laundry. I remember when classmates of mine in undergrad did this. She is uncertain how to help me with my current predicament. I suppose at some point I will get the door to open and sopping wet I will drag my clothes to the patio to hang them to dry.

Everything is not all damp here. Yesterday was beautiful and I hung out in my window sill absorbing a little sun. I also had the pleasure of going to dinner with my preceptor, his wife, and his oldest daughter Danielle who is only 2 years younger than myself. Maybe she and I can be friends at some point, or at least she has offered for us to get a drink sometime or go see a movie at the cinema. I think I will take her up on this eventually. I wish I had pictures of the meal I had to share, but I think I would have felt silly pulling my camera out at the table and taking pictures of food. The eggplant dish I had was wonderful and then Danielle and I each got a dessert and split them - I ate a waffle for dessert, they are not breakfast food here. French fries are very popular so with our very nice dinner came some french fries and a salad. Interestingly those were for the whole table, but I'm fairly certain in an American restaurant the portions given for the whole table would have been the portions given to a single person back home. I did not eat my french fries with mayonnaise as is customary here.

I spent much of my evening skyping with my friend and his girlfriend in Germany last night working out when I should come visit. The result is it looks as if I will head to Bremen, Germany this next upcoming weekend. Of course I am extremely excited for this so that I can see my friend, meet his girlfriend, and really I very much want to watch some rugby matches - he is a rugby player and I miss playing the sport. Also, he had me bring him some pumpkin pie mix and jerky - some things he can't get in Germany. It really is the simple things in life. However, this circumstance is yet again making me dislike the rail passes I bought - I need to go back to the ticket agent I booked my trip to Zurich and maybe get a new rail pass at the cost of 30 Euros because my first dates of travel are already on the ticket and now I would need to change them to a week earlier. If I alter the ticket myself a train person might think I am committing fraud and then my pass is taken away and I am fined and possibly thrown off the train. I think at this point it is safe to say I do not advise buying a rail pass. If you can book everything in advance fine, but at the ticket offices you can only book two trips at a time and when you need to travel 10 days in two months this doesn't make sense to me. In addition to my upcoming travels to Germany I am looking for a hostel to stay at in Paris as I am not certain any of my friends who have friends will pull through with finding me a couch to crash on there or in Rome. I will need to book these soon so that I have a place to stay and ensure I get to see two of the places I want to see most. My preceptor has been so kind and has told me that if I need to take off early one Thursday to catch a train or a plane that I should tell him and I should do it - he remembers being young like me once when he did a similar sort of internship in New Jersey and his memories tell him he should let me have these experiences. What a very nice man. I suppose if I work hard I will get to play hard too.

Well I hope to finish my laundry now and maybe find a sand bar on the side of the river - or at least head out some place where I can take more photos to share.
